ERIK ALMAS
Erik Almas is a fine art photographer who has also done a number of work advertising for products for example ‘Absolut Vodka’
Almas also work heavily with CGI and compositing with his images to make them look surreal and unique, which is something that I may experiment with in my upcoming project.
Erik Almas’s work inspires my project due to the cinematic quality as well as surrealism that some of his campaign work has such as people holding trucks, the cinematic element is something that I want to try an implement in my project as I feel it will draw more attention to the images.
This is an image from Alams’s campaign portfolio, it features a man running with a pristine looking city in the background which is something that carries over to the man as he shows no sign of fatigue making him seem fit and healthy which viewers may find themselves wanting to be like this man which could sell people on the product as well as the lifestyle.
The image was made for Westin Hotels and Resorts, which over the series of images capture the brands foundations of ‘live well, sleep well, eat well, play well, feel well and work well’ with this image capturing several of these being ‘live well, feel well, and work well’ as the man is working (running) which will make him feel well and in turn he is living well.
Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was a successful magazine and ad illustrator who later became one of the most inspirational artists of the 1950’s ‘Pop Art’ movement where he experimented with various techniques such as Screen-Printing and filmmaking.
One of the key ideas in Warhol’s early work in commercial illustration focused on elevating an everyday product into a more desirable light, working with companies and magazines such as ‘Vogue’ and ‘The New Yorker’.
This idea of elevating an ordinary product into something more desirable is something that I want to try and achieve with my images.
I have decided to look at Warhol’s work as he was one of the most popular pop artists, with pop art being a stylistic inspiration to my images.
Davide Bellocchio
Davide Bellocchio was an art director for advertising until
he became a photographer by forming his creative studio, ‘Zona 13 Studio’ until
he left to work independently. Bellocchio has had clients from big companies
such as Vodafone, BMW, Sky TV and Adidas.
Bellocchio’s work inspire my project due to his unique
and inventive approach to his advertisements, as well as use of lighting which
are aspects that I want to use in my project.
This is an image Bellocchio made for BMW, in the image it has a person stood in the foreground holding their helmet with their bike in the middle-ground, the image is set at dawn with the sun rising but is blocked by the helmet which gives off an intense atmosphere which is amplified by the rider being dressed in black gear similar to the dark sky and road.
The way the actor and objects are positioned tells the
audience that something is going to happen, the image gives off a cinematic
approach as it seems like the rider is going to walk forward and get on the
bike.
